The Beauty of Working in Technical Support

    Posted on 01 February 2005

I recently began contemplating about technical support and its reputation in the engineering field…I mean don’t get me wrong, working in the lab and assisting customers is something i find rewarding (w/the joys of challenge, pressure, and deadlines). But as with anything in life, it gets to a point when one has to proceed to the “next level”. These thoughts are what led me to think about the role of tech support and what the “next level” is for me.

Sure enough, I was recently reading Guy Kawasaki’s “Art of the Start” and ran across this excerpt:

    “The Support Career Path

Dave Winer gave me a good tip about support. He thinks that support is one of the best entry-level jobs in a company. By definition, a good support person is a hard worker, a team player, empathizes with customers, and knows the product thoroughly. These are all qualities that promote success in other positions, so good support people can become great product managers, salespeople, and programmers.”
