2:30am & DeEsser
2:30 in the morning. I just slept from 9pm - 2am = good rest, much-needed rest i should say.
here’s a new random idea of mine from a week or so ago:
so owrking w/pro tools (audio production software) has introduced me to the concept of 3rd-party plugins used to enhance the sound quality of the recorded music…whether it’s EQ or distortion or whatever…one of these plugins is called a “DeEsser” and is used to monitor and tweak the severity of “s” sounds in vocals….for instance, a simple chorus w/the line, “somebody get my out of this place” has three “s” sounds…which can sound over “s”-ed when EQs are applied to the vocals (almost always)
so here’s the catch: why not install DeEsser technology in microphones (all types - studio mics, karaoke mics, speech mics, etc.) and make it a standard in the ‘mic society’….if the amount of extra cost to install this technology is not substantial w/respect to the overall cost…then why wouldn’t any consumer invest in such mics (and subsequently, why wouldn’t ALL mic companies then adhere to the ’standard’?)?
btw, i thought of this idea when watching Jen-Hsun Huang speak at the NVIDIA seminar last week. Perhaps I do have some bias since my sense of hearing is a bit more keen than that of the average person (loud to you = louder to me)….but nonetheless, it’s an idea to consider.
Any thoughts? Please, by all means, post your opinion in the forum (reply to the msg).
