    networking = the way

    Posted on 06 May 2005

    @su today has been full of interesting events, a synaptics manager approached me while i was eating my lunch and writing stuff down in the student union, she asked me about my mp3 player (was listening to ipod) and asked me to attend a forum tomorrow where they would be asking students about their opinions of various mp3 player interfaces (and they would pay $50 for students to go)…when she handed me her business card, i mentioned that i knew of synaptics and their battle with cypress semi for the clickwheel contract with apple…she was totally surprised mentioned and it was the first time in 4 years of working at synaptics that someone she approached knew that much about the company
    – i guess it does pay off to follow business news (or current events in general for that matter) ;-)
    the speech by the chairman emeritus of agilent techn. was decen/somewhat uplifting, it seems that a substantial amount of renowned tech executives are all pointing at two major items:
    1) china/asia is going to take over in the next decade
    2) biotech/nanotech/medicine is going to be the next big thing for silicon valley (history of SV thus far has been: 1.research, development 2. semiconductors 3. PC revolution 4. internetworking/internet 5. ???)
    i was reading magazines in the bookstore afterwards…newsweek front cover = china is taking over and will be the head honcho in the coming years, fortune = articles about biotech being next big thing, medicine unique to each patient’s DNA, bought the new fortune magazine with the cover story on google entering the software industry and slowly attacking microsoft..did you know that blogger is owned by google? i didn’t. as i was reading, i ran into kharlo, a buddy from a leadership conference last year…told me he started a company that throws parties and has made $5k in several months, invited me to a party, etc. told him about my idea of starting the venture capital/engr/bus org (which i was brainstorming/sketching when synaptics women came by)..picked up org-starter guide from student life and leadership
    –networking is pretty nuts in this society… upon brainstorming, i’ve just come to a realization of how much easier it will be to start this org and get funding since:
    1) meredith, my scholarship advisor, is the head honcho of the organization that allows students to start new organizations
    2) alberto, my former roommate and good friend (whom i may be rooming with in a house next year), is president of Associated STduents, the main (possibly ONLY source besides dues) source of funding for student orgs/clubs.. oh, and it does help that i was a director on AS for a year or so too ;-)
    pretty nuts how it all comes together, i guess 1) a good brainstorming session really picks out important things that you don’t think of right off the bad, 2) networking really is nuts

    oh and cisco is now #91 in the fortune100, as compared to #100 last year, WORD

    BTW, student organization name…
    1) spartan innovation
    2) …spartan start-up / garage
    stupid names? good names/

    class time for life
    peace
