    not cool

    Posted on 19 May 2005

@library most people who know me well understand that one of my main pet peeves is when other ppl are not on time for events (i.e. punctuality).. it really angers me and shows a level of irresponsibility and crap-reliability, yes i am guilty of it at times..hypocritical? not so much, because we’re talking major events here.. anyway, to cut to the heart of the matter, today was the big presentation day for our co-op projects that we’ve been working on through the semester..and only 5-6 ppl out of the entire class are chosen to present their projects during the final presentation day (today) to industry managers, associate deans, school VPs, engineering professors, what-not… i had invited two of my ‘managers’ (mentors) to attend this big presentation (where i had been chosen to speak…and was moved from third to FIRST speaker after rehearsal last week — as i was told by the career center lady who arranged the schedule) and the first of my mentors, scott, was the first to arrive and i was very happy to see him there, etc…but the other mentor, chuck, was not there…
now, i had gone through getting TWO (not one..like most co-ops in the class) parking permits for chuck and scott for them to attend this presentation and chuck had signed a contract saying he would come to the event AND i gave him the permit and reminded him last week AND i sent him an e-mail reminder yesterday…and low and behold, he doesn’t show up late.. he DOESNT COME..and calls scott during our conversation and tells him that he will ‘not be able to make it’ and ‘apologizes’…to me, this is bullshit at its prime, it pissed me off and pisses me off while i type this…for a number of reasons…
    1) i told him many times about this presentation date AND he (not scott) is actually my ‘official’ mentor because he is the one who signed the initial contract for my co-op project
    2) that damned permit that i had…i TOTALLY could’ve invited my actual manager, robert, or even joe, the senior vp that initially invited me to work at cisco…to PROVE to management the beauty of this project and the hard work i’ve put into it…but no, i wasted a fucking permit on chuck, who decides at the last minute that he ‘can’t make it’…
pissed off? that’s an understatement, let me remind you that my pet peeve is people who are LATE to important events..not DON’T SHOW UP..bullshit
now don’t get me wrong, i presented at my prime nonetheless and was 110% happy that scott could make it and am so thankful for his guidance through the project and taking time out of his workday to traverse the distance to san jose state and watch the presentation…but that doesn’t discount the fact that chuck was irresponsible, wasted my permit/invitation, and expired any respect that i had for him before… yes i did get great feedback from professionals and faculty and peers after the presentation and got an A+ in the class (assumed based on received grades)..but ggrrr

time to get back to studying for finals, what a great start to finals week…thanks scott and to all who attended the event, to chuck…ever heard of the word ‘reliability’ or ‘responsibility’?
