    the truth

    bitter rant / realization:

    1. the sucky thing: in our society, we (as consumers/students/etc.) have become so used to the concept that anything deemed ‘professional’ or any person w/’credentials’ should be trusted and respected. don’t be fooled! there are some real incompetent ppl out there who are in positions to make big decisions. of course this is not always the case, but allow me to cite a few examples:

    ex a.

went to eye doctor recently, my trusted doc doesn’t show up and instead a substitute o.d. shows up and she does a check-up. hits my eye w/machine by accident, tries to make $ by pushing a sell, converses w/me to try to deter frm her incompetency, forgets measurement data, can’t find contacts but her assistant can, 10-15 min checkup.

    bottom line: absolute crap-work.

    ex b.

went to professional mastering engineer in sf, demo masters a song of ours. uses software (as opposed to hardware) that one can easily crack at home. talks to us calmly as if all is cool and mentions that the music is mixed great. finishes in 10-15 min, no input requested.

bottom line: the output is dull, useless, crap.

    2. the reality: there are many ‘professional’ ppl w/credentials in our society who are actually quite incompetent. ok, maybe they are not exactly incompetent, but they churn out low quality work that is trusted (and it should not be). it’s really sad to think about 1. how these ppl attain such positions and retain their reputation and 2. the fact that there are consumers/students/etc. out there totally investing trust in these ‘professionals’.

in the past couple months, i have been very hesistant and skeptical of trying to do things myself that others can do professionally or investing trust in other professionals. i’ve now come to realize that i need to believe in the high standards/expectations that i set for myself. if i expect something to turn out at a certain quality, it better turn out that way. as market competitors start to come into the picture, this idea is becoming more and more clear. some ppl out there really perform very mediocre work that frankly bites. it is up to those truly outstanding individuals to push themselves out there and wipe the incompetent ones out of the picture!

of course being too naive and not trusting anyone would be a deadly route! simply be more aware and most importantly, take action.
