Gmail RSS “and then some”
Posted on 09 December 2005
Gmail just launched a “clips” section at the top of their e-mail service that shows the latest RSS feeds. basically, you can subscribe to whatever online blog or magazine or news headlines via RSS and it will automatically update in your e-mail account for u. this is assuming u use the internet browser to check your e-mail as opposed to MS outlook or Eudora.
A response to Yahoo’s similar system that came out in beta like a month ago… but no one needs to know that….
Revelation:
(a) Yahoo Mail : Gmail
(b) Windows : Tiger OS X
(c) XBox360 : Playstation3
(d) Christianity : Buddhism
What do these items have in common?
Sounds like a SAT verbal problem :) ok before you take offense to any of this, let me explain: yes, i am relating religion to the competitive tech world. each of these pairs are basically two individual parties with certain features and concepts. although in each situation, there are slight differences in ideals, in the end.. they all offer more or less the same set of base features (or system architecture). e.g. Xbox360 and PS3 are both cutting edge gaming systems BUT you can buy games for Xbox360 that are not available for PS3 and vice versa. now, think about when you switch through the TV channels and you see an enthusiastic preacher pouring his heart out with testimonials, etc. i think his objective is to have you adopt a system of ideals and convert… i think you get the point. i’m not gonna delve into religion comparisons (i am religious) but the bottom line is… this competition game basically revolves around matching your competitor’s features …. and then some. the “matching your competitor” part is assumed (aka if you can’t match, forget it) but it’s the “and then some” part that gets you that potential edge.
just think about when you go to the CD store and… ok nevermind, CDs are dead… it’s like comparing potential college choices after receiving the acceptance letters… same schools blah blah blah.. but wait… what? scholarship? full-ride? wireless on entire campus? etc.etc. <- and then some.
On Gmail’s new features section, right under the “clips” part, there’ s a “shortcuts” section that’s unique to Gmail i think… and then some?
