    Pocket Change Manifesto!

    Posted on 05 December 2006

When you’re a poor college student whose income comes from volatile stocks, you’re destined to a path of efficient spending. I’ve been trying to cut back on expenses recently. While doing so, I came up with an idea:

Make good use of that stash of pocket change!

I have a stash of coins in a big jar on my desk. And a lot of miscellaneous change lying around on the floor from whenever I’m picking dirty jeans. I collected all this change and divided them into one-dollar-stacks.

Now, whenever I leave the house, I bring one of these stacks with me. This way, I feel good about my purchases because it’s as if I’m getting a one dollar discount on whatever petty items I buy. That’s 50% off a $2 burrito (or a free pack of gum)!

Assuming you use one stack per week, that’s $52 saved in a year!

Am I saving a lot of money short-term? No.
    Long-term? Maybe!

It makes me feel good. :)

That’s a good idea seperating them into one dollar stacks. Do cashiers get frustrated when you pull out this hand full of change though?

Nope, it is $ nonetheless :) but my stacks usually consist of no more than 10 coins. I’m thinking of making stacks of 100 pennies and exchanging them for dollar bills at the banks.

I have two piggy banks I fill up whenever I have too much change in my pocket. When the piggy banks get full, I take them downstairs in front of the TV and pour out all the coins onto the carpet. I’ll also grab a bucket filled with coin wrappers that I got from the bank or purchased at a store (very cheap). I then begin to start stacking coins into stacks while I watch TV and wrap coins. It’s pretty shocking how much money you have saved in coins. Two relatively small piggy banks can amount to $80-$100 in coins. After I’m done wrapping I’ll go to the bank and get it all switched out for bills!

[…] all, I am still that poor college student trying to save on expenses. Making a few bucks here and there wouldn’t hurt […]
