Personally, I like the layout of your site. I think you should think about your readers. We changed our blog a few months back and lost about 50 UVs per day - yikes! Evidently, the change was not very popular. We stuck it out and have gotten our readership back up to a more respectable level.
Just my 0.02 :).

I know you’re all about simplicity+speed so my only advice would be to follow that mantra. I like fast page loads. If you add more graphics and more bells and whistles, the page won’t be as smooth+fast as it is now. What was that saying again? Form meets function?
