Aite so after all this iPhone madness I have come to one single conclusion: Apple won’t be selling very many iPhones. Why? Because when you boil everything down, it’s still a phone. People see it as a phone, not as a new iPod. If Apple decided to sell an iPod only version of this device without the phone, it might do well. The price point is too high. There is no way people are going to rush into stores to buy a $500-$600 iPhone. It competes with smartphones and as far as I am concerned, Blackberry has that market cornered. Smartphone sales are largely focused around big companies, namely, investment banks. Unless Apple can convince Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to drop their Blackberries and pick up iPhones (highly unlikely), iPhone sales will not be great. I see this product as a great revolutionary product, but sales-wise…it won’t hit the spot.

I might just buy my first cell phone :x

    4. Tony Chung Says:

      Interesting points Kevin.

      Some key points from Macworld.com:

“The iPhone will come in two versions, a 4GB $499 model, and an 8GB $599 model with a two-year contract. Both will be available beginning in June. Cingular will be the exclusive U.S. carrier.”

It’s a bit unfortunate that the release is not till 5 months down the road. What I found interesting is aggregation of all these features in one (camera, video, music, internet, phone). Apple is supremely good at making products with a sole focus (e.g. iPod).

Regardless, the yuppies will scavenge the iPhone like no other. It is insanely sweet eye candy. Check out the demos at Apple iPhone website.

BTW, I’m sitting on the carpet in the bridgeway between the two Moscone Centers at Macworld, and there are two people sitting to my left and right, simultaneously drooling at the Apple iPhone images on their screens. :)

    5. Tony Chung Says:

      Oh and a funny fact:

They have ONE iPhone on display here at Macworld, not touchable because it is in a big casing … and protected by a security guard. :)

    6. Jon Tzou Says:

Meh, sex sells, and the iPhone reeks it.

If anything, Cingular (now AT&T?) will be the rate-limiting factor.

The RAZR debuted at about $500, and people flocked.

    7. Nii A. Says:

80 percent chance i’ll get one in June. =)

    8. Nii A. Says:

The thing is delicious man… only thing that’ll stop me from picking one up is my fear of first gen products. =)

    9. Kevin Says:

As a rebuttal to Jon Tzou, I’d like to say that the Razr was still a phone. It wasn’t a SMARTphone. The Razr was targeted towards the general public and not professionals. To truly take advantage of the iPhone’s capabilities, you’ll have to drop an $80/mo data plan. That’s why I say Cingular is the overall winner in this game. Working with cellphone networks is like working with giant gorillas. Whatever they want, they get. Apple has essentially become a cell phone provider. They are now at the mercy of cell phone companies like Cingular who will push them around. People are going to walk into the Apple store to pick up an iPhone and then realize that they also have to buy a brand new plan that costs $80/mo to get unlimited data. Otherwise no gmaps, no Yahoo! mail, no nifty visual voicemail, and none of the bells and whistles that make it so cool. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not ready to drop $600 and $80/mo for a smartphone. I’m also not ready to pay $600 for a new ipod.

    10. Tony Chung Says:

Just chatted with a buddy here, very interesting that Apple has chosen to use the name “iPhone” right after Cisco (Linksys) just released their “iPhone”.

      Did someone say lawsuit?

    11. Kevin Says:

      iLawsuit!

    13. Jon Tzou Says:

Haha, I mentioned that minor fact in my blog entry.

And to Kev, I have to agree. The money will be an issue, but mainly for people who shouldn’t be handling a phone like this in the first place. I consider Cingular lucky for landing this deal, because they really weren’t that sexy until today.

And it’s funny - my point IS that the RAZR was just a phone, yet people threw down the money for the phone, the plan, and the data. Now, people can get a “smartphone” for as much money as a regular phone cost a few years ago. Rates of depreciation are picking up, but this really is a steal for the hardware alone.

$80/month does suck though, no matter how you look at it. Is it really that pricey?!?!

    14. Tony Chung Says:

      Great posts Kevin and Jon.

“I consider Cingular lucky for landing this deal, because they really weren’t that sexy until today.” -nice :)

      Two other crazy-mactastic facts:

      1. From Forbes:

“Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday announced the iPod maker’s long-awaited leap into the mobile phone business and renamed the company to just “Apple Inc.,” reflecting its increased focus on consumer electronics.”

      2. Steve jobs was not wearing his ubiquitous black sweatshirt today. It was maroon. :)

    16. Kevin Wu Says:

Hey just checked out an article written by a Time Magazine reporter that got to check out the iPhone before the launch:

      http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1575410-1,00.html

quote: And you’re required to use it as a phone—you can’t use it without signing up for cellular service. Boo.

Hopefully Cingular will drop the price on their voice+data plans but from what I know, it’s about $80/mo ($960/year!!). I don’t know about you guys, but doubling my cell phone bill every month isn’t an easy decision to make….

    17. Nii A. Says:

Looks like the iPhone will be running on cingular’s edge network instead of the newer/faster HSDPA… As cool as the iphone is, it’s doubtful i’ll drop 500-600 w/ contract on a phone which isn’t operating on the latest network.

      =(.

    18. Tony Chung Says:

This is starting to look like the Baidu IPO event. Totally bright, shoot-to-the-top, exciting response… then ever-so-slowly neutralizes downward ;)

[…] An ineresting article on how Google may exceed $600 in stock price in 2007. I think the Googmonster will gobble up some more innovative tech companies in 2007 and who knows.. Maybe they’ll pull an Apple and dive into another industry? […]
