January Reddit - Small is the New Big
In keeping with my 3 new year’s goals of reading 1 book per month, I’m close to finishing Seth Godin’s ‘Small is the New Big’.
After some thought, I think that I’ll provide a favorite quote and a quick thumbs-up/thumbs-down review for the book of the month. I’ll do this the last Friday of every month.
For ‘Small is the New Big’:
Review:
I usually only buy the books that are at least one of the following:
-
1. Will reference the book in the future
2. Will highlight and write in the book
This book satisfies both categories. In fact I highlighted stuff on almost every other page of the book. Seth is one of the most read and influential bloggers on the internet today. Some great testimonials and advice/tips on how best to market or run a business. And also a lot about blogging successfully. Definitely Thumbs up!
Quote:
On naming your business or domain:
“Don’t listen to anyone else. All your friends will hate it. Good. They would have hated Starbucks, too (you want to name your store after something from Moby Dick?). If your friends like it, run.”
I didn’t know Starbucks was a name of a character in ‘Moby Dick’. Did you? :/

Not an avid reader by any stretch of the imagination, but I strongly recommend The Seven Laws of Money by Michael Phillips. It was written in the 70s and was inspired by the ’seven laws’ found throughout Tao philosophy. Very valuable lessons and a good book for reference. The brevity of the novel is what appeals to me the most (120 pages) and it is written quite lucidly.
Also, Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken. Haven’t read it, but an apporpriate suggestion nevertheless. Basically, it offers a ‘win-win’ situation, in that we can be more effiicent and profitable, as well as preserve our beloved environment. Offers an optimistic outlook for the future…Hopefully, one of your readers have come across it, so they can give you better insights.

Starbucks - yes! He’s a sailor of some sort in the book. And I don’t even know why I know that.

I’m in the middle of David Allen’s Getting Things Done, but I’d recommend it so far. If you need more ideas there’s always http://joshkaufman.net/personalmba

Yes, I had heard about the Starbucks name origin. I heard something about how they almost named it after a the ship from Moby Dick, The Pequod. Much better name, they chose.
