Cool Google Hack for your cell phone

    Posted on 31 January 2007

Here’s a cool little Googlie for your cellie that Kevin showed me last week.

Suppose you’re on the go. Using your text message function, you can:

    Find locations of stores nearby.

      1. Type in a store and zip code e.g. Safeway 95192
      2. Send it to Google i.e. 466453

Google will text you back locations of Safeways in the general vicinity of that zip code.

    When’s that movie playing?

      1. Type in a movie name and zip code e.g. Borat 95192
      2. Send it to Google i.e. 466453

It will text you back theaters in the zip code area WITH UPDATED MOVIE TIMES.

Try it! It’s totally awesome and formatted. This is very helpful. If some company got to this before Google, that company would be pretty filthy rich right now. Maybe this hack is old news. And I wasn’t in the loop. But I now am and this is an awesome Googlie for thy cellie!

How would a company get rich over this? Most people use the service only because its free =0)

I’ve never seen any ads in the sms msgs so I wonder how they make money off of this (if they do at all).

Btw theres a bunch of other stuff you can ask google with your cell. definations, directions, weather etc etc

    2. Eric Says:

oh damn! It’s free!? Why have I not heard about this until now? Thank you Tony, thank you for your geekness :)

Shiva, to answer your question, think about Youtube or MySpace. What do they have in common?

      1. All free services
      2. All made money after hittin’ it big (by being bought out by a big player)

Most ppl aren’t going to pay for a service right off the bat. But once it becomes indispensable/ubiquitous, you’ve got some pretty loyal fans. Those fans eventually become customers.

Eric - glad I’m not the only person who didn’t know about this yet ;)

Haha, I really had no idea this existed. This makes me somewhat sad as well, since a good friend of mine started a business that did JUST THAT. Google probably wiped them out. Sad.

Old old news! This has been goin on since 2004! C’mon Tony, I thought I showed you this already! =)

This is very old news, but it’s fun to share regardless. Most people still haven’t used this service - I end up telling people about it lots. Google released some business card sized instructions a while back. I grabbed a whole stack of them, but now can’t remember where I got them.

But I do wonder what makes this a ‘hack’? If anything, it’s a slimmed down version of Google Mobile Apps for people who can’t use it (*cough* Verizon *cough*). Well, I guess this came first then Google Mobile apps, but still…

    11. Tony Chung Says:

Robie, the definition of ‘hack’ has been exploited these days. Another example of a cool ‘hack’:

(Hacking Google Maps to zoom beyond the normal zoom) It’s always cool to learn about these little known hacks before it hits mainstream. Like following that niche rock band before they sell out :)

    12. Aniela Says:

I really like to use the google maps on my cellphone. I downloaded their API and it works great.
