Have you heard of this… ‘Internet’?
Apparently there’s this thing called the ‘Internet’, which runs on computers. Think it’ll catch on?
That’s the catch line for this video on YouTube. Not sure when it was taped, but at the time, there were only 15 million people on the internet. Today, there are over 1 billion (or 1,000 million) people on the web.
It’s really interesting and almost humorous to see how the internet was described back when it was only a novelty.

Some quotes from the video:
“They’re sharing scientific data, arguing philosophy… night and day through a computer network called ‘Internet’. (On Emoticons) …Little signs made out of punctuation marks…, they’re called emoticons. They come out sideways, tilt your head left and you’ll see a little smiley face that means ‘I’m kidding’, a little frownie face that means ‘I’m serious’.
Imagine the world ten years from now. What topic will be laughing about twenty years down the road when a similar video surfaces from the archives? In other words:
What’s the next big thing?

“It feels a bit like everyday human television, but it’s bigger and more precise.”
I love the lack of article preceding “internet.”
One day, one day, one day … everybody’s going to laugh over all the ado over the oil crisis.

I’ve been online since 93 but why do these people look like they’re out of the 80’s.

Hm the oil crisis huh? Didn’t think about that one Angela. =/
Ditto Nii. I love how everything back then was command line interface, totally cryptic and intimidating to the average person.
