Moving Geekwhat to Different Hosting Company

    Posted on 12 April 2007

I’ve had geekwhat.com registered with 1and1 since the beginning. And now it’s time to move on.

    Why?

Because 1and1 provides incredibly slow load time.

    ..bites

I’ve been doing research on the delayed loading of my site for a few weeks now. I’ve done many things to optimize Wordpress (my blogging platform) and speed up the site:

    • WpCache plugin
    • Killing unnecessary plugins
    • Minimizing amount of content that is loading from external servers
    • Optimizing php code

After all this, yes, the site is running a bit faster. But it still lags like crazy. Which is super annoying. I apologize to all the readers who have to experience the slow load time of this site. And I further apologize for how incredibly long one must wait after posting a comment and pressing the ’submit’ button. So I’ve decided that it most likely is the hosting company bandwidth. I’ve read serveral complaints from bloggers using Wordpress and 1and1.

Is this a true conclusion? I wonder if it may be my template? I certainly doubt it. I’m thinking of switching over to GoDaddy or Media Temple (although probably not MT, too expensive).

Can anyone provide insight on the problem? Have you experienced similar issues?

      Tony,

I strongly recommend Media Temple. I can put you in touch with some people there who can probably work you a deal to make sure they win on price and features.

Wow that would be sweet Louis, I appreciate your help.

Are you hosted by Media Temple right now?

    3. Louis Gray Says:

Tony, I’m actually hosted through Register.com. Nothing special, and they occasionally sucketh (that’s a real word). But I do talk with the (MT) guys often. If I were a big cheese, I’d make a move. But I’m simply a lowly one-person quasi-powerhouse.

There are a couple low cost hosts that you might look at. You could check out IXWebHosting. I have used them for awhile for a family site. They are not the best or fastest but they have an Any-Time money back guarantee so you don’t have to ever make a commitment. Try it, if you don’t like it, move on. A host with a nicer experience is Site5. I have used them for some contract prototyping and RoR stuff. When you get the high traffic you might consider Concentric, where I work, they have serious Sun hardware and a cluster of servers to spread your traffic over.
In theory it might be cool to try and store your blog data on Amazons S3(http://tinyurl.com/qx87a) solution. Then you would, theoretically, not have to move your blog data everytime you change hosts.
Maybe you could call up your pick of hosting providers and get an interview with them and checkout there datacenters. Might be interesting , or not. They might give you a deal?
In reality there is a lot of cheap disk space that goes unused. You could probably talk to your other blog friends if they have some extra space on their host and you could split the bill. Come to think of it. I probably have some space I could hook you up with.

      Anyways food for thought.

I run several domains… Half of which (the ones i don’t want to ever go down ) on aplus.net the other half on hostpc… both give great service but aplus gives you 24/7 phone support for less than 10 bucks a month

    6. Tony Chung Says:

Wow thanks for all the great advice. So here’s the rundown:

      - Media Temple
      - IXWebHosting
      - Site5
      - James Erbes space :)
      - Aplus.net
      - HostPC

Less than 10 bucks a month would be ideal. I’m going to look into these services over the weekend. Muchas gracias again all!

    7. Bobby Says:

I was wondering about that…didn’t want to complain though. It does seem to take a long time to load even with high speed connections.

      Thanks for switching over.

    8. Tony Chung Says:

Thanks for the feedback Bobby. The load time is painfully slow. =p Time to take action…

      Tony,

I’ve got a free 12 months on my feed with Jumpline.com. You won’t be sorry - I’ve been with them for a few years.

I feel your pain on the whole 1and1 thing, but my problems weren’t related to service quality per se:

I do however have some tips from my own experience that I have about choosing a good host:

as well as my recommendations for which host you should chose.

I found your site via technorati. Looks good. Good luck on your search!
