    Tiny Google-inspired Geekwhat revamp

    Posted on 18 May 2007

After seeing the subtle interface changes on Google.com a few days ago (have you seen it yet?), I decided to do a little revamping myself on geekwhat. Instead of tossing on a new theme, I decided to tweak some colors and move the sections of the frontpage around a bit.

The comments, top contributors, and photo sections are now in a neat spot at the bottom of the site (coded by yours truly =)). And to increase page loading speed, I decided to cut the number of front page articles to two. I think that somehow when I’m redesigning the site, I’m almost trying to move away from the ‘blog feel’ i.e. the 10+ posts on the front page look. Trying more to keep things organized and interesting — and compelling.

    Any suggestions?

I really like the bottom of the page.
Is that flickr part a plug-in or are you showing off your skillzzzzzz?

    3. Tony Chung Says:

Thanks Paul, I got the flickr embed code from the site =)

      Sharp.

Really like the redesign. Great looking. Can you do something like that on a typepad blog? Say, jetson green?

    6. Tony Chung Says:

Hmm never worked with Typepad but I’m sure it’s possible.

Looks great. I love the footer!

      Some ideas for experimentation:
      * Did you ever think about slightly changing the background color on the sidebar to bring attention to the posts? Or even a line perhaps. Sometimes sidebars and posts collide when the background matches - especially when they’re white.
      * Centering the entire content?
      * Setting a min-width on the main content and solidifying the sidebar width(s) so that the content will stretch on a wider resolution.

They may or may not work! I’m just throwing out some random stuff!

One other thing that will work… use HTML comments wrapped around your post content so that the Google Ads will be specific to the content.

I really like the layout. You’re making me start to think about making some mods to mine, now!

    8. Tony Chung Says:

Wow thanks for the tips Doug! I really appreciate it, just updated the code for Google ads, you’re totally right. That trick totally makes the ads more relevant.

I’ve wanted to make the sidebar static and center the blog for a while now, just not 100% sure how to go about it without breaking the interface ;)

You’ve got a good thing going! Don’t ruin it with my advice. :) I was truly just ‘throwing some things out’.
