Jobs and Gates, Together at Last
Posted on 01 June 2007
As you may have heard, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had a chat a few days ago (May 30th) — video below. Update: My buddy Charn brings an interesting point how Steve Jobs comes off as suave and slick and cool, whereas Gates is the type of person you would want to be your friend, someone you can talk to. What do you think?
Does anybody know the reason for this legendary meeting? It certainly generated a lot of news. A publicity stunt for both companies maybe?

I think the two personality types are clearly seen in their marketing and distribution. I’m writing this on a MacBookPro, but it was a little much for Jobs to try to make anything complimentary out of ‘PC Guy’. Those ads are kicking Microsoft’s butts and making fools out of them. I thought Gate’s restraint was amazing.
Thanks for posting this! I’ve been wanting to see it.

I think it’s that very restraint that makes him the friendly, slightly dorky, admirable guy that he is. The next door neighbor effect. ;)

I’m kinda reminded of the SNL skit with Jobs talking about the iPhone…haha. It’s easy to spoof Jobs and I agree about what you said about Gates. Gates does make public appearances and seems easier to approach. Recently at an event for new products/inventors here in Silicon Valley.

Interesting thing about Gates is that he isn’t just a great businessman, he has a really sharp technical mind as well whereas Jobs doesn’t (Jobs without Woz would be a nobody). Plus Gates philanthropic work is phenomenal; he really is a modern day Andrew Carnegie (who I think was just amazingly brilliant).
Also, hell yeah! Got a name drop on the front page of Geekwhat! :)

i agree with charn -
though steve jobs has the apple aesthetic/visionary appeal down, gates wins in philanthropy, technical smarts, and interpersonal relations (not sure how gates is with this but presumably better than jobs).
plus in the video, i can’t help but sense from steve jobs that childish “i’m better/cooler than you, neener neener” need to prove himself, while his sly remarks bounces off of gates like rubber and not glue.

Neener neener neener neener ;) Definitely see your point there Floria. I really like the ending of the chat when Jobs quotes the Beatles song. It was touching to say the least.
