Fun tip for Drinking Soda, Coffee…
Posted on 10 June 2007
Do you drink soda or coffee daily?
Yes I know sounds random. Because it is ;) But uber helpful. Read on:
My clevertastic girlfriend gave me a very interesting and helpful tip earlier today about drinking soda (or any colored drink for that matter — tea, coffee, coke, pepsi, etc.). I want to share it with you. So here’s the tip…

Use a straw!
Why? Because then the liquid goes right past your teeth and down your throat. You still get to taste the drink, but it won’t stain your teeth! Fun huh?

Hey Tony,
Are you still in LA?
So, it’s funny that you posted about dental care, because since I went to the dentist last month, I have been obsessed with dental hygiene. So here’s something that i heard about but have no idea if it’s true:
After drinking something acidic (orange juice, soda, etc) don’t brush your teeth right away. the acid softens the enamel on your teeth, and if you brush, you’ll brush the enamel right off. saliva hardens your enamel.

VERY interesting. Let’s get Philip in on this convo since he’s studying dentistry over at USC.
Yep, I’m in LA!

One thing I know about WWDC is that right after Job’s presentation AAPL wasn’t looking so good….it’s not like Jobs announced a turd on a stick!

I drink a 64 oz double big gulp everyday, and usually a few more on top of that. My dentist has been telling me to drink from a straw for years :)

4 different sources in the Caries Research Journal report the following:
-Waiting periods had only a minor effect on increasing abrasion resistance
-It is concluded that (1) abrasion resistance of softened enamel increases with remineralization period and (2) at least 60 min should elapse before toothbrushing after an erosive attack.
-Even after a period of 1 h of remineralization, abrasion of previously eroded enamel is increased
-If no other preventive measures are taken we suggest that individuals at risk for erosive tooth wear wait at least 1 h before brushing their teeth after consuming erosive foodstuffs or beverages.
There doesn’t seem to be a consensus in the field about this particular topic, but ultimately you want to prevent any decay or erosion from occurring, and the best way to do that is the avoid soft drinks. For the addicts like myself, rinse with water after you drink soda to help restore the pH to normal, and consider waiting a while to brush (unless it means youre going to forget to brush altogther…lazy bastards). To confer the most protection, you can rinse with a fluoride rinse before and after you drink soda. PEACE
