    Jack Sparrow teaches Business

    Posted on 14 June 2007

Have you watched ‘Pirates of the Carribean’? I just watched it again recently. Remember Jack Sparrow? He said one thing that I dig much. The dialogue went something like this:

Captain of ship: “You’re just about the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of!”
Jack Sparrow:   ”Ah, but you have heard of me.”

This is a business lesson in disguise. Why? Think about it. Better yet, think about these situations:

    • That one song you hate because it is overplayed and annoying.
    • Rosie o’ Donnell.
    • Sanjaya from American Idol.

    Do you get it?

What can I say? I love my readers. ;)

I just watched this movie for the first time last week (I’m on top of pop culture, 2003 here I come!) and I feel embarrassed saying it but it’s a seriously downright awesome movie.

Also, yes! The orange abyss is no more!

    4. Jason Says:

on your list at the bottom after Sanjaya you should put
“Jason, that bitch that made fun of my superstardom”

      haha…I know you’ll remember me forever. :P

    5. Tony Chung Says:

Haha how does that work out? The commonality of those people on the list is that they all have somewhat of a negative image, but are all super well-known by all.

Charn, yep, decided to get rid of that orange section, too inconsistent. Do you dig the new look?

    6. warren Says:

I disagree. Fundamentally what is good business and for whom? Notoriety may not be good business. Being known for being a crook is not good business. Bad press is good press only because it still stimulates public intrique. A bad reputation is, inherently, bad business, in my opinion.

    7. Tony Chung Says:

I think we are on the same page Warren. The post was not implying that this style of being known for negative reasons is good business. Instead, it is simply illustrating examples of things that are majorly well-known, albeit for not-so-great reasons.

      More examples:

      - William Hung
      - …

    8. Tony Chung dot CA Says:

Two words: WILL HUNG… need I say more?

    9. Charn Says:

Yeah, the new look is much better.

      William Hung? Todd Packer :)

    10. Tony Chung Says:

      Todd Packer! Wow =)

so working for P&G, i’ve learned this about advertising. A commercial can be a really dumb non-interesting one, but it can still be effective. for a while i kept wondering why all these boring commercials kept making it on air, but then i realized that they’re still EFFECTIVE, they still make people want the product.

    12. Douglas Karr Says:

      And don’t forget, the “iPhone”

      :)

    13. Tony Chung dot CA Says:

Hey Doug… the iPhone doesn’t need marketing. It’s just plain cool… ! ;-) What would make it cooler is if they open up the OS to allow third party apps that do stuff. Then I’ll swap my dream of a windows pocket pc phone for it.
