Making Connections is Beautiful

Clarification: 1) Making connections with people AND 2) Making connections between things you encounter = BOTH beautiful.
When I coordinated LawYours a few months ago in Palo Alto, one of my weaknesses was that I had no connection with any law firms in the Silicon Valley. And the event was focused on bringing together 1) startups without law firm representation, and 2) law firms focused on startups.
So the immediate focus became:
How do I get connected with as many law firms as possible in a smooth way (within a month)?
The bottom line was I needed their sponsorship ($$$) in order to run the event. (No one wants to give money to a guy who has no experience with law firms running a law firm event.) But you know what? In the end, 5 of the top law firms in the Valley, 2 high-profile speakers, wine sponsor, and 50 of the top entrepreneurs in the Valley gathered together for a relatively successful night.
It happened due to strategy and networking. Networking. Yes networking.
My buddy James Erbes once commented on this blog:
“What you learn in one area is not wasted in another if you understand that everything is relative. For instance understanding electricity and curcuits can make you a better tennis player if you understand relativity.”
In other words: making connections between things you learn in life. I think it’s a beautiful and well-made point. Well…
I’m now in Taiwan and pursuing the entertainment industry. This is not where I was born and I’ve only lived here for less than 5% of my life. Aka: not many connections / friends here to begin with. Networking is as important in this industry as it is in any other (I’ve come to realize). So my new objective has become:
How do I meet fellow artists and actors in a smooth way quickly?
I worked my tail off and succeeded with LawYours and I know that I am capable in this situation too. However, I need to set time limits with goals in order to monitor my progress. My vague goal is to take advantage of every potential networking situation (whether it be a social outing or concert). Making two new friends (meaningful relationships) in the industry per week is my “goal” goal. As most of you know, I’m all about goals ;) Here we go!
