    How Does Japan Do it?

    Do what?

Well, for one, I’d bet that 1 out of 10 households in the US has a Nintendo Wii system. Oh.. and do you drive a Honda (or know someone who does)? ;-) But let’s put those things aside. Let’s look at the music industry in Japan. For those of you who research and follow hip hop news, you know that some of the biggest acts are expanding to none other than Japan. Here’s a list:

    1. Pharrell Williams. One half of the hit-making duo The Neptunes (that’s him above on the left). He’s produced for Teriyaki Boyz and also collaborated with Nigo of Bathing Ape (above photo on the right) to bring his Ice Cream clothing line to Japan.
    2. Diddy and Ryan Leslie. Bringing Cassie out to Japan to perform for the retail owners in order to start performing/selling in Japan.
    3. Kanye West. Also producing for Teriyaki Boyz and Japanese influence in his latest music video and album cover.
    4. Gwen Stefani. She basically breathes Japanese culture in her style and music.

Let’s revisit Teriyaki Boyz. They did something on their debut album that I’ve never seen done before on a debut hip hop album: They got first-class American hip hop producers to create every single song on their debut album. How did they do this? Either 1) $$$$$ up the whazooo, or 2) major connections and strong friendships.

Japan is coming up. More and more. There’s a movement happening and it’s very exciting. I plan to visit there around Christmas time. Anybody game? :)
