Two Items Unique to Hong Kong

    Posted on 12 February 2008

There may be more, but these two strike me as… standing out:

    1. McDonald’s ice cream cones have outer chocolate coating! That’s right, I have never seen this in any McDonald’s outside of Hong Kong. It is absolutely delicious AND cheap (less than $0.30 USD!).

    2. Custom of washing utensils before your meal at a restaurant. At most dim sum places, before you start eating, you go through this process:
      1. Pour hot tea into your tea cup.
      2. Move your spoon inside the tea a few times to… kill bacteria.
      3. Move chopsticks inside the tea a few times as well.
      4. Pour tea into soup bowl to get rid of potential dirt.
      5. Move the drinking rim of the tea cup inside the bowl of water to wash the area where you will drink.
      6. Not done yet…. :)
      7. Pour a little tea onto your plate and move the plate around to get rid of any dust particles.
      8. Lastly, pour all tea you used into a big bowl.

Then you pour a fresh cup of tea and you’re good to go! :)

You can check out my photos from Hong Kong at my flickr. Also, here is a little video introduction of Mong Kok (the place to go to shop the street markets):
