Two Items Unique to Hong Kong
Posted on 12 February 2008
There may be more, but these two strike me as… standing out:
- McDonald’s ice cream cones have outer chocolate coating! That’s right, I have never seen this in any McDonald’s outside of Hong Kong. It is absolutely delicious AND cheap (less than $0.30 USD!).
- Custom of washing utensils before your meal at a restaurant. At most dim sum places, before you start eating, you go through this process:
- Pour hot tea into your tea cup.
- Move your spoon inside the tea a few times to… kill bacteria.
- Move chopsticks inside the tea a few times as well.
- Pour tea into soup bowl to get rid of potential dirt.
- Move the drinking rim of the tea cup inside the bowl of water to wash the area where you will drink.
- Not done yet…. :)
- Pour a little tea onto your plate and move the plate around to get rid of any dust particles.
- Lastly, pour all tea you used into a big bowl.
Then you pour a fresh cup of tea and you’re good to go! :)
You can check out my photos from Hong Kong at my flickr. Also, here is a little video introduction of Mong Kok (the place to go to shop the street markets):
