The Meaning of Life (in Today’s Society)

As I was taking a taxi home today, I had a revelation… there is a taxi service in Taiwan where you basically call a phone number from your cell phone and you can have a taxi come pick you up at your current location. As I was sitting in the backseat of the taxi today, I saw the driver pressing buttons on a small device. He later told me that this device is his means of receiving upcoming cases (picking up clients who have called the service). So he is basically picking up and dropping off client after client… And that’s when the revelation struck:
Our life (just like this taxi driver) consists more or less of case after case of servicing other people.
Sounds simple… it is. When I say ‘life’, I am referring to work, because quite frankly… most of our life consists of working (minus retirement). Think about what you do at work… whether it’s servicing your manager or your client, that’s pretty much your main task. You are in essence spending the bulk of your life satisfying others, one case after another. Sounds kinda sad, huh? A somewhat far-fetched conclusion: The meaning (or objective) of life in today’s society is… basically to satisfy other people. I guess the exception to this idea is art. Generally speaking, artists are spending their time satisfying themselves. Yes, in today’s society commercial art is created to make money and satisfy others… but in the very traditional sense, artists are creating for their own satisfaction.
So is the point of this post to persuade everyone to become an artist? Course not, but… maybe we can discover elements of that artist deep within ourselves… The bottom line is that I think realizing this concept is important. It can help you to steer towards a more meaningful lifestyle where you are AWARE that your life is more or less satisfying others, but you will be more conscious of WHO you are satisfying and if it makes sense… Heck maybe you’ll become an artist. :p
