Applying the ‘Remix’ Concept to Life
When I write or record music, I basically create in the form of sound whatever I am feeling at the given moment — be it angst or bliss. So if you listen to my musical works, they stretch across many genres and sometimes even into some ‘wtf territories’ (experimental stuff ;)).
My most recent musical interest is creating remixes, i.e. stripping an existing song of its music and only keeping the vocals (acapella track). I then find the tempo of the song and completely redesign a new piece of underlying music from scratch to accompany the existing vocals. Remixing to me is almost like putting on a sporty/athletic outfit, then completely changing into a business suit… your body –being the vocals/lyrics– remains the same, while the clothes –music– is completely changed. You feel?

The ‘remix’ concept applied to fashion…
So I was thinking about how we can apply this ‘remix’ concept to stuff other than music. And I realized that the concept actually shows up in a lot of everyday situations! Some examples:
- New significant other. Generally speaking, one’s taste in the opposite sex remains somewhat consistent in relationships. So when you break up and start a new relationship, those features in the opposite sex that interest you remain (vocals/lyrics) whilst the person changes (music). Boom!
- Cooking! That’s right… California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) is a perfect example. The circular pizza dough concept remains the same, but there’s a mighty spectrum of topping combinations ranging from BLT to wasabi!
- Presidential election. George W. Bush is the music of USA right now (sidenote: if this really were the case, what genre of music would G.W. be? ;)). We the people are the vocals/lyrics. Once a new president is elected, the musical genre may completely change…
Any other examples you can think of?
