I will be visiting Hong Kong with my buddy Wei this week. I realized that when compared to other nearby Asian countries, Hong Kong seems to be the ideal vacation spot for Taiwanese folks given its close proximity and its attractions. Here are a few reasons why this is the case:

1. Japan’s a bit farther and when you think Japan, you usually think expensive.
2. For some reason, Korea simply isn’t as popular as Japan or Hong Kong for vacation.
3. Macau comes hand-in-hand with Hong Kong (you can take a one hour boat ride straight to Macau from HK).
4. Singapore, meh…maybe?
5. China, a bit far and you have to go through Hong Kong to get to anywhere in China, so why not just visit Hong Kong? ;)
6. Out of all the nearby Asian countries, Hong Kong is the most Mandarin-fluent country (Mandarin = Taiwanese native language, Cantonese = Hong Kong native language).

As for the reasons that people visit Hong Kong, here are a few:

1. Cheap and hacked electronics like PS2, XBox, iPhone, etc. Hong Kong is notorious for selling high quality hacked tech toys.
2. Authentic Louis Vuitton (and other expensive brands) products. Believe it or not, many folks from China fly to Hong Kong simply to purchase authentic yuppy products like Louis Vuitton bags. Apparently, it’s really hard to find such products within China. Because of the high demand, you’ll actually see lines outside those stores (crazy sight).
3. Buy inexpensive clothes at street markets. Lots of popular street markets in Hong Kong. Kinda ironic when compared to item 2. ;)
4. Dim Sum?

Did I miss any?

I’ll be staying at a hostel this time, it was dirt cheap (about $15 USD per night). But according to my friends and online reviews, they are actually very clean and tidy. Only the rooms are very small, but that’s irrelevant since we will probably only be spending rest time in the room. So what’s the purpose of this trip? Fun! I miss Hong Kong and haven’t seen my friends there in a long time. Also, to visit my dad! I actually really dig Hong Kong’s vibe… the skyscrapers, Victoria Harbor, Lam Kwai Fong (nightlife), etc. I’ll report when I get back! ;)
