Nice video; his attitude towards everything is remarkable and inspiring. It reminds me of an old Japanese samurai philosophy from one of my favorite movies. Something along the lines that a man's life is just a succession of moments. If one is to fully understand the present moment than there is nothing else to pursue.

Very interesting thoughts Jerry, 3G makes sense. Although 3G will allow users to stream as opposed to store, I still think it's inevitable that the 2nd gen iPhone will be larger in hard drive size. If they can pack 160GB into the new iPod classic, there's no doubt in my mind that they already have a 20GB or 30GB iPhone ready to go in their labs (flash).

I'm more interested in seeing a worthy iPhone competitor hit the market. Maybe a Nintendo phone...

What do you all think? When will generation 2 be available?

I've given a lot of thought to this.. and I know there is a ton of speculation about a "nano-sized" iPhone, but I believe that is just speculation.. no truth to it.

We have to think.. "what is best move for Apple to make right now?"

We know the iPhone was largely a success in the United States. So, they are surely going to release the iPhone internationally, most likely starting with either Europe or Asia. The problem is, they can't just localize the software and ship it. Europe and Asia are on 3rd-generation (3G) GSM networks (and are even starting to use 4G now). If Apple shipped the current 2.75G iPhone to Europe and Asia, it would not be nearly as successful as the iPhone was in the U.S. For this reason, I believe a 3G iPhone will be released in the next year.

3G service is available with AT&T (see: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/technology/3g-umts.jsp), but it currently costs more than the 2.75G service. However, people who want broadband Internet speeds rather than the sluggish EDGE network will be willing to buy the 3G version and pay for the service (they'll definitely sell both versions 2.75G/3G for awhile in the U.S).

A 3G iPhone will also have greater potential.. as there is no longer the need to store all of your music and videos in the hard drive of the phone when you can just stream your media from over the Internet. I imagine this phone will be similar to the current iPhone with a number of additional 3G features, such as video conferencing. This is all within the reach of our current technology (the Japanese know that).

Any thoughts?

I personally feel that the Washington Post ad made a false assumption that costs of the Google phone will be subsidized by ad revenue generated by Google's ads. I don't think the phone is going to be cheap.. maybe a few hundred at least. Yes, Google plans on making a ton of ad revenue with the device, but I doubt that their business model for this device fits in the possibility of selling these phones (they will be smartphones) for under $300.. way too risky. People will buy it just because they'll have Google's services at the palms of their hands.

I think Google just plans on releasing its technology the way it has on the Internet on mobile devices. In order to seamlessly integrate their software into hardware, they are looking into creating their own phone. Think about the iPhone and Google maps. Apple displayed how much potential there is for Google's applications on mobile devices. And because their phone used a multi-touch screen, they were able to make one of the most intuitive implementations of Google Maps ever. No other phone manufacturers have been able to do this before because the hardware was never created specifically for the software.

There are a ton of possibilities for Google. If they throw in a GPS chip, they also potentially enter into the GPS navigation market. Who knows.. it's definitely worth a shot for them to do this.

Thought I'd join in on this conversation (my first appearance on Tony's site). I am set on getting the iPhone in October and did all of the math already. Your estimate was a little low, Tony..

$399 (iPhone) + $36 (activation fee) + $1,439.76 (2-year minimum @ $59.99/mo) = $1,874.76 before taxes.

So, $2,029.43 with California sales tax.

Surprisingly, it is about the same cost as a Blackberry because Blackberry service costs more than iPhone service, but AT&T will subsidize the cost of the Blackberry. So, Apple's $200 price drop was definitely in an attempt to align itself with its closest competitor for this holiday season.

What all this mumbojumbo really means is...

Now you have a reason to get the iPhone

but don't forget $50+/month for AT&T service = $600+ per year in service charges

so two years of owning an iPhone (assuming you don't go over your minutes):

$400 + $600 + $600 = $1600++ (taxes)

that's six and a half Wii consoles... :)

Interesting... got a URL with the scoop?

I'm usually drooling and getting my wallet ready after a Jobs keynote. But this time... bleh. The wifi on iPod Touch just doesn't appeal to me too much, you go to Starbucks... you gotta end up paying the $30+/month T-mobile plan to use their service. Basically you can use the wifi in your house and steal wifi when on-the-go, too much work. And the other iPods are weak in my opinion... new UI.. bleh.

Who knows, I might own one in the next few weeks ;)

Looks like Jobs is offering up $100 to early adopters due to the recent $200 price drop but the $100 has to be spent at the Apple Store. Apple has huge profit margins on accessories sold at the Apple Store. So *if* someone takes the offer (and historically under 10% do take rebate types of offers) Apple is really only giving up giving up about ~$30 to get customers into Apple Stores and spending money (and once in the store people will spend more than the $100 Apple gave them).

Jobs is a brilliant salesman...

You can't connect to EDGE like you can on a iPhone because that's part of your $60/month ATT service but unless you like in like Alabama their should always be a Wi-fi access point somewhere nearby.
